Our History
The Lindam story begins in the 1930s in a small workshop in Lincolnshire, England. Our founder, Fred Lindam, was an expert ironmonger and locksmith who handcrafted fireplace grates and gates. As families grew following the war, he saw parents struggling to manage their curious toddlers near dangerous staircases and fireplaces.
Inspired to help, Fred created a simple but effective safety gate using his metal-working expertise. The adjustable wooden pressure bar allowed the gate to squeeze into place securely. This innovative pressure mount design became the genesis of Lindam’s stair gates.
Word soon spread locally about Fred’s useful invention. He established the Lindam Company in 1935 to meet growing demand. We steadily expanded our range with gates for the top of stairs, fireguards, and playpens.
Growth & Innovation
In the 1950s, we pioneered the “retractable gate” which used springs to pull the gate back into the frame. This allowed adults to easily open the gate with one hand while holding a child in the other.
As homes and families modernised, Lindam matched the pace of innovation. We introduced lighter aluminium gates in place of heavy steel and iron. New proprietary pressure fittings provided a safer, customised fit.
In the 1990s, we launched the first self-closing gates along with designs for angled, curved, and extra-wide staircases. Our range now includes over 200 products tailored to every unique home.
Through it all, Lindam has remained proudly family-owned. We are still based in our hometown in Lincolnshire where our products are thoughtfully designed and manufactured.
International Reach
From our UK roots, Lindam expanded worldwide. In the 1980s, we established bases in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
Today, our products are sold in over 45 countries around the globe. We provide safety solutions for families from Toronto to Tokyo, Sydney to Stockholm.
